Description: Homo sapiens melanoma antigen family A, 6 (MAGEA6), transcript variant 1, mRNA. RefSeq Summary (NM_005363): This gene is a member of the MAGEA gene family. The members of this family encode proteins with 50 to 80% sequence identity to each other. The promoters and first exons of the MAGEA genes show considerable variability, suggesting that the existence of this gene family enables the same function to be expressed under different transcriptional controls. The MAGEA genes are clustered at chromosomal location Xq28. They have been implicated in some hereditary disorders, such as dyskeratosis congenita. Alternative splicing results in multiple transcript variants. [provided by RefSeq, Aug 2013]. ID:MAGA6_HUMAN DESCRIPTION: RecName: Full=Melanoma-associated antigen 6; AltName: Full=Cancer/testis antigen 1.6; Short=CT1.6; AltName: Full=MAGE-6 antigen; AltName: Full=MAGE3B antigen; FUNCTION: Proposed to enhance ubiquitin ligase activity of RING- type zinc finger-containing E3 ubiquitin-protein ligases. May enhance ubiquitin ligase activity of TRIM28 and stimulate p53/TP53 ubiquitination by TRIM28. Proposed to act through recruitment and/or stabilization of the Ubl-conjugating enzyme (E2) at the E3:substrate complex. May play a role in tumor transformation or aspects of tumor progression. In vitro promotes cell viability in melanoma cell lines. SUBUNIT: Interacts with TRIM28. INTERACTION: Q13263:TRIM28; NbExp=2; IntAct=EBI-1045155, EBI-78139; TISSUE SPECIFICITY: Expressed in many tumors of several types, such as melanoma, head and neck squamous cell carcinoma, lung carcinoma and breast carcinoma, but not in normal tissues except for testes. SIMILARITY: Contains 1 MAGE domain. CAUTION: In vitro experiments by PubMed:17942928 measuring cell viability in melanoma cell lines used siRNA specific for MAGEA3 and MAGEA6.
The RNAfold program from the Vienna RNA Package is used to perform the secondary structure predictions and folding calculations. The estimated folding energy is in kcal/mol. The more negative the energy, the more secondary structure the RNA is likely to have.

The pictures above may be empty if there is no ModBase structure for the protein. The ModBase structure frequently covers just a fragment of the protein. You may be asked to log onto ModBase the first time you click on the pictures. It is simplest after logging in to just click on the picture again to get to the specific info on that model.
Orthologous Genes in Other Species
Orthologies between human, mouse, and rat are computed by taking the best BLASTP hit, and filtering out non-syntenic hits. For more distant species reciprocal-best BLASTP hits are used. Note that the absence of an ortholog in the table below may reflect incomplete annotations in the other species rather than a true absence of the orthologous gene.
