Human Gene SOAT2 (ENST00000301466.8) from GENCODE V44
Description: Homo sapiens sterol O-acyltransferase 2 (SOAT2), mRNA. (from RefSeq NM_003578) RefSeq Summary (NM_003578): This gene is a member of a small family of acyl coenzyme A:cholesterol acyltransferases. The gene encodes a membrane-bound enzyme localized in the endoplasmic reticulum that produces intracellular cholesterol esters from long-chain fatty acyl CoA and cholesterol. The cholesterol esters are then stored as cytoplasmic lipid droplets inside the cell. The enzyme is implicated in cholesterol absorption in the intestine and in the assembly and secretion of apolipoprotein B-containing lipoproteins such as very low density lipoprotein (VLDL). Several alternatively spliced transcript variants of this gene have been described, but their full-length nature is not known. [provided by RefSeq, Jul 2008]. ID:SOAT2_HUMAN DESCRIPTION: RecName: Full=Sterol O-acyltransferase 2; EC=2.3.1.26; AltName: Full=Acyl-coenzyme A:cholesterol acyltransferase 2; Short=ACAT-2; AltName: Full=Cholesterol acyltransferase 2; FUNCTION: Plays a role in lipoprotein assembly and dietary cholesterol absorption. In addition to its acyltransferase activity, it may act as a ligase. May provide cholesteryl esters for lipoprotein secretion from hepatocytes and intestinal mucosa. CATALYTIC ACTIVITY: Acyl-CoA + cholesterol = CoA + cholesterol ester. SUBUNIT: May form homo- or heterodimers (By similarity). SUBCELLULAR LOCATION: Endoplasmic reticulum membrane; Multi-pass membrane protein. SIMILARITY: Belongs to the membrane-bound acyltransferase family. Sterol o-acyltransferase subfamily.
The RNAfold program from the Vienna RNA Package is used to perform the secondary structure predictions and folding calculations. The estimated folding energy is in kcal/mol. The more negative the energy, the more secondary structure the RNA is likely to have.

The pictures above may be empty if there is no ModBase structure for the protein. The ModBase structure frequently covers just a fragment of the protein. You may be asked to log onto ModBase the first time you click on the pictures. It is simplest after logging in to just click on the picture again to get to the specific info on that model.
Orthologous Genes in Other Species
Orthologies between human, mouse, and rat are computed by taking the best BLASTP hit, and filtering out non-syntenic hits. For more distant species reciprocal-best BLASTP hits are used. Note that the absence of an ortholog in the table below may reflect incomplete annotations in the other species rather than a true absence of the orthologous gene.
